After a little bit of reading and a little bit of code customization… the Random Photo is truely a random photo taken from the gallery. The picture is a link to that specific picture in the gallery, the first line of text underneat is a link to the album. If there is a caption, it is even displayed below the picture. I think its pretty cool :)
