Good Idea, Bad Idea!

Good Idea: Keeping your kernel up to date to utilize the latest features and ensure that you are not open to exploits against older kernels.
Bad Idea: Assuming your newly compiled kernel will work, blowing away all your old important kernel things and rebooting… remotly.

I’ve spent the past 2 days battling this poor server. Something I’ve been doing that worked just… stopped. I had to switch from udev (the new hotness) back to devfs (old and busted). Of course, this system takes like 5 minutes JUST to get to a grub prompt… and about 75% of the time it won’t boot from CD!

I shall be more careful in the future! Instead of removing old kernel’s and modules… I will keep them, which I have done EVERY TIME up until this one. I will also be sure THAT system isn’t my only way to it!
